Good dental hygiene is important not only for your smile, but also your overall health. Gum disease, also know as periodontitis, has been linked to heart disease, stroke and diabetic complications.
Regular dental exams and professional teeth cleanings can prevent these and many other health problems.
Some of the most important health benefits of regular teeth cleanings include:
At Dr. Korol Dental, our highly-qualified and registered dental hygienists can gently remove any plaque buildup and hardened deposits, promoting the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
Performed by an experienced dental hygienist, teeth cleaning is a safe and simple procedure. Here is what is involved:
Prior to any teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist will conduct a comprehensive exam of your teeth and gums.
Over time, plaque buildup can lead to hardened deposits (tartar) forming on your teeth which can only be removed by a dental professional.
During an extensive deep teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist will use a scaling tool to remove any plaque or tartar from around & beneath your gum line and between your teeth.
Once all the plaque has been removed from your teeth, the dental hygienist will use a high-powered electric brush to remove all residual tartar.
Scaling and root planing, also known as a deep teeth cleaning, is very different from a regular cleaning.
While the latter focuses on the surfaces/between the teeth above the gum line, a deep dental clean is needed in order to remove bacteria, tartar and any debris that has collected under the gum line.
A deep teeth cleaning is required to treat gum and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gum, jawbone and the structures suurounding the teeth. "Peri" means around, and "odontal" refers to teeth. Swollen and bleeding gums are early signs that your gums are infected with bacteria. If nothing is done, the infection can spread. It can destroy the structures that support your teeth in your jawbone. Eventually, your teeth can become so loose that they have to be extracted.
Every person is different. It depends largely on the extent of the disease progression. On average, a deep teeth cleaning will require a minimum of two visits with the dental hygienist as well as a follow-up appointment to ensure that your gums are responding to treatment and getting healthier.
Before your deep teeth cleaning treatment, our dental hygienist will carefully discuss with you what you can expect before, during and after your procedure.
This is to ensure you are fully comfortable and able to enjoy the full results of your treatment.
