Wisdom Teeth Removal in Calgary

Wisdom teeth are molars found at the four very back corners of your mouth. Typically, they are the last of your teeth to erupt, occurring during the late teen years or early twenties.

Whilst in some cases wisdom teeth grow without causing any discomfort, in many patients these molars become impacted (fail to emerge) due to insufficient space in the mouth. In such situations, extraction is often recommended.

Some of the symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth include:

  • Wisdom tooth pain
  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Difficulty opening your mouth
  • Bad breath/unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Jaw pain/swelling
  • Swollen/red gums

Importance of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

A misaligned wisdom tooth can push against and damage your other teeth. In addition, it may cause damage to the jaw and even affect surrounding nerves.

A dentist will often recommend wisdom teeth removal if:

  • The wisdom teeth become trapped in your jawbone/gum
  • There is insufficient space in your mouth for them to grow properly
  • Cavities have developed on your wisdom teeth
  • Your wisdom teeth are growing at the wrong angle, crowding your existing teeth

If you are experiencing the symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth, it’s important to see your dentist as soon as possible as extraction will prevent many complications including gum disease and decay.

Recovering From a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

It can take up to 2 weeks to fully recover from your wisdom teeth removal procedure. During this time, you may experience:

  • Swelling: This will be worse for the first 2-3 days but will gradually improve. Gently applying a cold compress in the days following the extraction will help reduce the swelling.
  • Sore/Stiff Jaw: The stiffness of your jaw will wear off within 7-10 days. However, the skin around your jaw may feel bruised for up to 14 days.
  • Wisdom Tooth Pain: This may be more severe if the extraction was complicated. Your dentist may give you prescription painkillers to ease any discomfort.
  • Facial Numbness: Though this is less common, some patients may experience some numbness or tingling in their face, tongue or lips.

If you experience any excess bleeding, severe pain or other unusual symptoms, you should contact your dentist immediately.

  • Avoid strenuous activity and exercise for a few days
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep the extraction site clean and free of infection
  • Eat soft/liquid food for the first few days and chew with your other teeth
  • Use a cold compress/ice pack to reduce any swelling
